Preface

From ancient migrations to today’s global movements, humanity has always been on the move. With every journey coming encounter, cultures meet, ideas collide, and new forms of expression quietly take shape. Across centuries, the shifting paths of people have dissolved borders and given rise to richly layered artistic worlds. Among these journeys, the Chinese diaspora forms a vast and far-reaching network. Spanning continents and cultures, it carries an enduring creative force that continues to reshape and renew Chinese culture across the globe.

As a key academic project of the He Xiangning Art Museum, the Overseas Chinese Art Exhibition has travelled through narratives of migration—from Voyage to Nanyang to Journey to Europe, from Gold Mountain Dream to Working at the present. In its seventh edition, Where The Sea Reaches, the exhibition opens outward, shifting from regional perspectives to a global, ocean-centered vision. Here, the ocean is a metaphor, a bridge, a passage, a connective force that links dispersed lives and shared histories. Ten artists, long based in countries including Ireland, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Australia, bring together painting, photography, video, archival practice, and installation. Their works move across borders, discussing the nature and experience of transnationalism.

This landmark exhibition is presented in Suzhou for the first time, opening up a new space for dialogue in overseas Chinese art. It aims to introduce outstanding works to a broader audience and to cultivate a more international and cross-regional artistic atmosphere. To better articulate the academic achievements of the project, the exhibition is organized into four sections: “Records: Narratives”, a documentary section presenting participating artists and scholarly perspectives from previous editions; “Collection: Classics”, showcasing highlights from the He Xiangning Art Museum’s collection of overseas Chinese art; “Convergence: Sea Water”, recreating the exhibition site of the seventh edition; and “Residency: Exploration”, presenting the outcomes of the newly initiated “Residency Program for Young Overseas Chinese Artists.”

From the shores of the South China Sea to the water towns of Jiangnan, this multi-site exhibition format keenly captures the recent “migration turn” in the social sciences. Overseas Chinese art is thus emerging as a language that connects global communities.
