Foreword

Oceans have always played a vital role in the history of human development. In BC2000, Aegean Civilization, originated next to Aegean Sea, developed a prosperous commercial trade due to the excellent geographical environment. In the Ming dynasty, Chinese fleet commander Zheng He set sail to explore the world for the first time, which greatly boosted the development of maritime traffic and foreign trade in ancient China. Began in the 15th century, the Age of Discovery even changed the world situation and mankind's view of the planet. Nowadays, marine transport and seabed resources still keep promoting the development of industry, technology, trade incessantly and more and more attention is drawn to the oceanic pollution.

The study of work of female artists from both China and abroad is one of the key missions of He Xiangning Art Museum and we hope people and society can pay more attention to female artists by curating more exhibitions involving them. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China(PRC), we are honored to invite two female artists with different backgrounds, Yu Lanyin and Lin Jiangdong to showcase their ocean themed art.

Yu Lanyin’s ink wash painting reflects her rich experience of diving which creates an unique inner world in her. Blended, and overlapped by different colors, her ink wash painting shows us a world of tranquility and profoundness.

The basic ingredient of Lin Jiangdong’s rock-dyestuff painting is color. By using mixed media and splashing the colors on the canvas, she lets the colors defined themselves freely. Echoing to her thoughts and feelings, these paintings present pictures full of the passion of life and the vitality of nature.

We hope that by curating this exhibition, more people could know these two female artists and understand their creative concepts as well as get a totally different experience and a new understanding of the ocean environment through these two female artists’eyes.

We would like to express our sincere thanks for the various help and support offered by everybody.
